CHANGING THE BASE YEAR FOR CALCULATION OF CPI

(a)whether retail Consumer Price Index (CPI) has registered a growth of 5.1 percent during January 2015;

(b)if so, the details in this regard;

(c)whether the base year for making the said assessment has been changed;

(d)if so, the details in this regard and the base year selected for making the above assessment;

(e)whether the above assessment has increased in comparison to the last four months; and

(f) if so, the reasons for this increase? Will the Minister of LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENTbe pleased to state:-

(a) & (b):Yes Madam. Year to year provisional inflation rate (i.e January 2015 over January 2014) based on All India General provisional Consumer Price Index (Combined) for the month of January 2015 is 5.11%. 

 (c) to (f):The Central Statistics Office(CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revised the Base Year of CPI 2010=100. In the revised series many methodological changes have been incorporated, in order to make the Indices more robust.

 All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the revised series (Base Year 2012=100) for each Group and General Index for the last four Months is given at annexure-1.
