EXPANSION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 

(a) whether the Government has made any assessment for the possibilities of earning more foreign exchange through export in information technology; 

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereto;

  (c) the steps taken by the Government for expansion of information technology in Tier 2 and 3 cities and towns;

  (d) the details of proposals received from various State Governments for setting up Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) during the last three years and the current year, state-wise and location-wise; 

(e) the action taken by the Government on each of the proposals, State-wise; 

(f) whether the Government has reviewed or proposes to review the functioning of the STPI; and 

(g) if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereto? 

ANSWER

(a) and (b): As per the Report of the Working Group on Information Technology Sector for the II five year plan set up by the Planning Commission, the IT-ITES industrys exports are forecast to grow at a CAGR of 13.8 and reach USD 130 billion by FY 2016-1 from USD 68. billion (Estimated) in FY 2011-2012. 

 (c): Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), an autonomous society under the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY), Ministry of Communications & Information Technology has set up 52 Centers across the country, out of which 5 centres are located in Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities. Further, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry vide Notification No. G.S.R. No: 5 (E) dated 12 July, 2010 has amended Rule 5 (b) of the SE Rules to relax the condition regarding minimum built-up area requirement in respect of SEs located in B1 and B2 category cities, making them attractive for investment. 

(d) and (e): As per Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), the following proposals have been received from various State GovernmentsUT for setting up of STPI Centres during the last three years and the current year:-   . , 4

These proposals are at various stages of evaluation.  (f) and (g): There is no such proposal under consideration of the Government of India.
