PRODUCTION OF BT. COTTON

(a) the production of Bt. Cotton vis-a-vis traditional cotton since its introduction in each cotton producing State in the country, year-wise;

(b) whether the area under Bt. Cotton has increased during each of the last three years in these States;

(c) if so, the extent`thereof; and

(d) the assessment of the Government regarding the future of production of Bt. cotton in the country?

 (a)to(d): A statement is laid on the Table of the House. STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (d) OF LOK SABHA SVARRED QUESTION NO. 11 DUE FOR REPLY ON 22° NOVEMBER, 2011.

(a)to(d): The details of the area under traditional and Bt. Cotton since its introduction in 2002 along with overall production of cotton are at Annexure I. This indicates that the area under Bt. Cotton has increased during each of the last three years. The adoption of different varieties of any crop, including cotton, depends upon seveial factors such as return on investment to the farmer, consumer preference, price etc.
