OILSEEDS PRODUCTION

(a) whether the production of rice, wheat, pulses, oilseeds and cotton have dwindled considerably this year and is likely to fall short of the estimates;
(b) if so, the details thereof, crop-wise;
(c) the reasons for decline in the production; and
(d) the production of the said crops in each State and Union Territory including Delhi during each of the last three years, crop-wise?

(a) & (b):As per 1st advance estimates for 2010-11 (covering only Kharif crops), the production estimates of rice and oilseeds during the Kharif season are lower than their targets. However, the estimated production of Kharif pulses and cotton are higher than their respective targets for Kharif 2010-11. The production estimates of wheat for 2010-11 (being a rabi crop) have not been released. The crop-wise details of estimated production of rice, pulses, oilseeds and cotton during Kharif 2010-11 vis-a-vis their targets are given in the table below:-

(c):The shortfall in production of rice and oilseeds has been mainly due to drought in major crop growing areas of the country such as East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal during the monsoon season 2010 and decline in the area coverage under oilseeds in some of the States such as Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
(d):Crop-wise and State-wise details of production of rice, wheat, pulses, oilseeds and cotton during the last three years i.e. 2007-08 to 2009-10 are given in the Annexure.
