XPORT OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS

(a) whether India is the largest exporter of petroleum products in Asia;

(b) if so, the facts thereof and quantum and value of petroleum products exported from India;

(c) whether private sector is having larger share in the export of petroleum products in the country;and

(d) if so, the ratio of the Government and private sector in the export, and the additional quantum of processing capacity vis-à-vis demand of the petroleum products in the country?

ANSWER

(a) & (b): Platts, a leading global agency on information on energy and metals, has reported that India has become the top exporter of petroleum products in Asia during the current year. Also, based on the data published by Joint Oil Data Initiative (JODI), International Energy Forum, in terms of net export volume (i.e. quantity of export – quantity of import), India has been the largest Asian exporter of petroleum products during 2009 and 2010. During 2009-10, the export of petroleum products from India has been provisionally estimated at 50.974 million tonnes at a value of Rs.1,44,037 crore (US $ 30.5 billion).

(c) & (d): Yes, madam. In the export of petroleum products from the country during 2007-08 to 2009-10, the average ratio of the Government and the private sector was 33.7 : 66.3 (or say 34 : 66). Against a domestic demand of 138.2 million tonnes of petroleum products during 2009-10, the total refining capacity was 177.97 million tonnes.
