NEW VARIETY OF SEEDS

(a) whether the Punjab Agriculture University has developed new varieties of seeds of different crops including wheat and rice;

(b) if so, the details of such seeds, their productivity and assessment regarding pest resistance;

(c) whether such seeds are available in various parts of the country;

(d) if so, the details thereof, State-wise; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) Yes, Madam. Eight new varieties including wheat and rice, developed by Punjab Agriculture University have been released during 2009-2010.

(b) The details of newly developed varieties of different crops alongwith productivity and pest resistance is enclosed as Annexure-I.

(c) to (e): These varieties have been introduced into seed chain. The availability of different varieties is also a function of their acceptance and adoption by the farmers.
