Janaushadhi Why..?
Health care cost in India is fairly high and in order to bring down the health care budget and to provide quality medicine to every citizen of India in affordable prize was very much essential. The branded drugs are too costly and could not be easily afforded by poor people. But the identical unbranded generic drugs which are very much therapeutically equivalent to the exclusive drugs are very cheap. So if a reasonably priced good quality generic medicine is made available in market, it would largely benefit the poor.
Failed Old Project
Initially it was launched by UPA government in 2008 under 11th five year plan. The target was to launch at least one Janaushadhi Centre in 630 districts of the country by 2012. The first 'Pradhan Mantri Janaushadhi Kendra' was inaugurated on 25th November 2008. Nonetheless, by the end of 2012 only 157 centres of Janaushadhi were opened and many of them were either closed or were non-functional. Out of 319 identified medicines only 130 medicines were made available to the public but the supply chain could not meet the requirements. So the old UPA Janaushadhi Project failed miserably.
New MODI-Fied Vision & Mission.
After Modi ji's arrival, the whole project was revamped and got a face lift. A Strategic Action Plan was devised to expand the whole project throughout the nation encompassing all the districts and Taluks. The list of generic medicines was restructured and most essential; lifesaving drugs were made available at the outlets. The whole product range contains 605 items with 452 generic drugs, 153 surgical and consumables, and further plans to increase the products to 1000.
Janaushadhi in Uttara Kannada Constituency
Initially the aim was to have at least one Janaushadhi Kendra in each district. But when our beloved Prime Minister Sri Modi ji took up the task in a mission mode, each district had multiple Janaushadhi Centers. By the end of 2018 Janaushadhi Kendra was present everywhere in country. In Uttara Kannada Constituency itself now we have 22 full-fledged Janaushadhi Centers.
